Ask anyone who has dealt with TU's site being down how important it is to have a failsafe backup. It may not seem like a big deal but the PIN provides a backup route when the website is down - you can call the automated system. It was bad enough that EQ didn't let you pick your own PIN and they left a backdoor that allowed people who didn't create a myEquifax account to have their freezes removed by someone setting up a myEquifax account in their name but now to get rid of PINs altogether? Oh Equifax! □♂️ I opted to just remove my freeze altogether rather than risk getting locked out of my report. I went to grab my PDF doc to grab the PIN after putting in the new freeze so I could update my documentation and there isn't a PIN. I logged in today to check my Equifax report and found that it had a lift on my freeze until December 19th of this year and the only way to remove a lift is to remove the freeze and put on a new one. This means if you get locked out of your Equifax account, you'll have to mail them identity docs. We therefore also recommend freezing your credit report at NCTUE.Beware that if you do a freeze with Equifax online now, it's exclusively through myEquifax and does not provide a PIN. NOTE: Some news outlets have reported that cell phone companies have opened fraudulent accounts using credit reports provided by the National Consumer Telecom & Utilities Exchange (NCTUE). Security freezes do not impact your credit. Afterward, your Equifax credit report will be frozen again. I absolutely did not succeed in putting a freeze on my account. My bank account lists my transactions for putting a freeze with TransUnion and Experian, but nothing for Equifax. The PINs I used for TransUnion and Experian were not 10 digits. You can also lift a security freeze by phone by calling our automated line at (800) 349-9960 or calling Customer Care at (888) 298-0045. I am absolutely certain that I havent been given/created a PIN for Equifax. You’ll need to provide information verifying your identity and will have the option to receive a one-time PIN by text message or answer questions based on information in your Equifax credit report for identity. All you have to do is call 1- (888) 298-0045 to start the process. It just means you’ll have to unfreeze your credit report before applying for a new loan.) At Equifax, you can use your myEquifax account to lift a security freeze for a date range you specify. You can also freeze your credit with Equifax over the phone. Please note: You cannot have both a freeze and lock on your Equifax credit report at the same time. There are no fees to lock or unlock your Equifax credit report if you are enrolled in Lock & Alert. (There’s a potentially confusing “Security Freeze Warning” section. With Lock & Alert, you can quickly lock or unlock your Equifax credit report online or via the mobile app. Some steps will vary but the process is very similar. You’ll need it later if and when you want to lift the freeze on your reports. Step 7 This is key: Record your PIN in a safe place. Step 6 Download and view your one-time PDF, which contains your PIN. Now repeat the steps with the other two big credit bureaus. Step 5 Confirm that you want to freeze your credit report. You just need to create a myEquifax account. You’ll need it later if and when you want to lift the freeze on your reports. You dont need a PIN to freeze or unfreeze your credit with Equifax ® if done online. Step #7 This is key: Record your PIN in a safe place. Step #6 Download and view your “one-time PDF,” which contains your PIN. Step #5 Confirm that you want to freeze your credit report. The freeze page will guide you through the remaining steps to place or manage your freeze. Follow the instructions to place or manage your freeze. Step #4 Click “Place Or Manage A Freeze.” You can place, temporarily lift, or permanently remove a freeze on your Equifax credit report. You may need to enter a code that the credit bureau sends to your email. Step #3 Follow the directions to verify your identity. You’ll need to provide your full name, date of birth, address, email and Social Security number. Step #2 If you don’t already have an account, make one.
